Cathy Madden

Biography

Training Background
Cathy Madden has been involved with the Alexander Technique since 1975 and has been teaching since 1980 when she started studying with Marjoie Barstow.

Positions of Office
Cathy has been working within the highly regarded University of Washington's Professional Actor Training Program in USA for 12 years and is now an Assistant Professor in the Program, and has been the Artist-in-Residence for the School of Drama since 1999. She is currently holding the Chair for Alexander Technique International (ATI) and has served on the Board in other positions in the past. She is an Associate Director for the ATA Teacher Training school in Japan. She has published many articles and academic papers on the Alexander Technique and is currently working on her first book.

Post-Graduate Work
After studying with Marjorie Barstow in Lincoln for 8 years, Cathy moved to Seattle where she was a founding member of The Performance School – an Alexander Teacher Training school based on the Activity Model of teaching developed by Marj. Because of her recognised skill, Cathy now teaches on many Alexander Training Courses in Europe, and leads post-graduate workshops for Alexander teachers in the USA, Europe, and Japan.

Her Approach
Cathy’s joy and fascination with the Alexander Technique is with its practicality and its effectiveness. It is a simple way to practice moment-to-moment mindfulness. In her teaching, her work is to bring out the potential of each student for freedom in thought and movement, so that they too can enjoy the gifts of their own coordination’s.

Home
She lives in Seattle, with her two children whenever they are home.
