What is Ukata?
Ukata stands for United Kingdom Alexander Technique
Associates, was founded by Jeremy Chance, and is a informal and
dedicated group of Alexander teachers, trainees and general public who
are inspired by some or all of these ideas -
- that realizing our shared human potentiality is at the
heart of our work
- that many of us have been inspired by the work of Marjorie
Barstow
- that teaching the work in group situations provides
original and inspiring learning opportunities
- that good communication skills are vital in sharing
Alexander's discoveries with others
- that learning works best when suffused with joy and laughter
- that playing games is a great way to learn about principles
- that Alexander’s discovery of a special use of hands in
teaching is a unique communication tool
- that the learning environment is enhanced when there is a
range of participants from absolute beginners to experienced Alexander
teachers
- that there is a distinction between Alexander's discoveries
and the methods or pedagogy used to convey them, so therefore...
- the teaching methodology of Alexander's discoveries can
evolve into new forms and expressions
- and that there are a great many differing teaching
paradigms for Alexander's work and none of them are right, and all of
them are valid
Why the UK?
Because Ukata will start presenting regular workshops
in the United Kingdom, with teachers
sourced from around the world, who share some, or all, of these points
of view about Alexander's discoveries. At first we will focus on
post-graduate work for Alexander teachers, trainees and long-time
students of the work. Later we will be appealing to performing artists
and educators.
If any of these ideas interest or appeal to you, you can learn
more by signing up for the newsletter and
hearing more about Ukata ideas and activities.
